Montgomery Spanish AcademyMontgomery, the state capital of Alabama, has never been known for its growth in Hispanic or Latino residents, but it seems as though the times are changing and the need to learn Spanish language and culture is important for all ages. During the 2000 census, 202,443 residents were counted. 2,777 described themselves as being of Hispanic or Latino origin with 1,654 using Spanish as their primary language inside their home. Recognizing the wealth of Hispanic heritage in the state of Alabama has become more important in recent years. In 2001, Gov. Don Siegelman declared the month of November to be Hispanic Community Recognition Month in the state of Alabama. During the month of November there are many cultural activities and festivities to enjoy throughout the state, including the city of Montgomery. As the Spanish language becomes more and more prevalent the Montgomery area with its residents, culture and activities, the need to speak the language increases accordingly.
